Week 5: The Expressive Object
October 20th, 2011 by Carl Lostritto
The reading for this week is By John Dewey. Chapter 5 in Art as Experience.(download pdf). I’m also uploading an earlier chapter, “Having an Experience,” which, if you’re interested, is a good conceptual bridge from our recent discussions: (download supplement pdf)
A quote from:
[Neubert, Stefan. "Diversity of Subjects in Dewey's Philosophy". pp. 20-21]
“Experience, for Dewey, is not restricted to the subjective experiencing of an objectively given reality principally independent from the process of experiencing itself and the one who has the experience. Nor is it, in the first place, a passive event, e.g., of receiving sense impressions. Rather, experience is characterized for Dewey by the two criteria of continuity and interaction. The basic unit in his concept of experience is the act, ‘and the act in its full development as a connection between doing and undergoing.’ wherein meanings are actively constructed.”
